Rochester, MN (KROC AM News - A northwest Minnesota family is enjoying a special Memorial Day weekend.

An East Grand Forks police officer who underwent a life-saving heart transplant at Mayo Clinic’s St. Marys Hospital was finally discharged last week.

He had been in the hospital since before Christmas.

Sgt. Tony Hart was airlifted to St Marys Dec. 15th due to serious heart and other health issues and eventually became a heart transplant candidate. He received the donor heart on March 1st.

He was able to relocate to a rehab center a month later and on Wednesday was officially discharged from the hospital. And there was a special surprise for Hart and his wife as they walked out.

Several officers from the Rochester Police Dept., Olmsted County Sheriff’s Office, and Minnesota State Patrol were there to give him a shoutout.

Hart will continue his rehab and treatment in Rochester until his health care staff clears him to return home.
