Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - The Rochester School Board may be ready to hire a search firm to begin the process of selecting a permanent superintendent.

Interviews were conducted Friday and may continue Monday.

A Rochester Public Schools spokeswoman says the interviews will likely be completed Monday. If staff selects a firm, the recommendation is expected to be presented to the school board for its consideration at its Tuesday meeting.

It may take a least a few months before the board is ready to hire a permanent superintendent.

Former superintendent Michael Munoz resigned last June after holding the position for 10 years.

The board hired Kent Pekel as interim superintendent and indicated at the time he could hold the job for up to one year while it looked for a permanent successor to Munoz.

Is Pekel interested in becoming the permanent superintendent?  When asked by KROC AM News, he replied with this statement:

"I am going to refrain from commenting on the search process at this time. I don’t want my personal professional plans to become a distraction while we are making difficult decisions to keep schools safe and open during the current COVID surge and as we begin taking steps at the school board meeting on Tuesday to close the major budget deficit that the school district faces in 2022-2023."
