Plea Deal Includes Probation For Attack on Minneapolis Officer

Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Minneapolis man is expecting probation when he is sentenced next month for assaulting and injuring a police officer during a riot that erupted in downtown Minneapolis in late August.

29-year-old Brayshaun Gibson recently entered into a plea agreement and admitted to one count of second-degree assault involving a dangerous weapon and substantial bodily harm. Three other charges, including two other felony assault charges and a burglary count, will be dismissed if the plea deal is accepted by the court.

The agreement calls for a significant downward departure from state sentencing guidelines. Court documents indicate Hennepin County prosecutors have agreed to a sentence of probation along with one year of electronic home monitoring. If he does get in trouble during his probation, Gibson could face a 21-month prison.

He was accused of throwing a 15-pound garbage can lid at the police officer, who fell to the ground and was knocked unconscious. The officer also suffered a possible spinal injury during the assault. The attack on the officer occurred during the rioting that followed false social media reports that there had been a fatal officer-involved shooting in downtown Minneapolis.
