We're Lucky This Dumb California Law Is Illegal In Minnesota

I flew out to California for a friend's wedding this past weekend, and immediately discovered something strange shortly after driving away from the airport in my rental car. I was slowly inching down a crowded, jammed interstate when suddenly out of nowhere, a motorcycle drove right between me and another car.

"WHAT THE $#%&@ ARE YOU DOING?!" I yelled out in terror.

That's when the friend I was riding with informed me about a California law known as "lane splitting," also known as "lane sharing." In California, it's legal for a motorcycle to drive between lanes or rows of slow moving or stopped traffic. Seriously, check out this picture I took a couple days later (don't worry, my friend was driving):

My take? This law sucks; especially for people like myself who weren't even aware that it existed. I get that it's probably convenient for the riders who want to avoid getting stuck in traffic, but I can't see how this wouldn't create a huge safety problem.

Thankfully, lane splitting is currently illegal in Minnesota. Can you imagine how annoying that would be?
