Trisha Yearwood Is ‘Beyond Nervous’ for ‘The Passion’ Live Musical
Trisha Yearwood is a member of the Grand Ole Opry; has sold more than 15 million albums worldwide, won three Grammy Awards and one Emmy Award; and is a two-time New York Times best-selling author. However, she is feeling a whole lot of nerves for the upcoming The Passion live musical, in which she will be playing the Virgin Mary.
The country star tells Today that she definitely feels some pressure over acting as the mother of Jesus Christ: "Even at home, I feel like I can't say a bad word right now," Yearwood says with a laugh. "I'm trying to cleanse my soul."
In all seriousness, the singer admits that the thought of performing in a live musical that is being broadcast to millions of viewers gives her more than the occasional butterfly.
“I’m beyond nervous. I’m really freaking out,” she tells the Today hosts, nodding at the wine glasses in front of them and adding, "I'm really glad there's wine."
While it makes sense that Yearwood herself would be nervous, she admits that someone else is nervous for her: her husband, Garth Brooks.
"He’s like, ‘I’m going to be your support however you want. Like if you want me to go to New Orleans and hold your hand, I will. If you want me not to go, I won’t go,'" Yearwood says. "So, I don’t know what I want. I haven’t decided yet, but I’ve still got a few days to think about it. He’s probably going to have to be there.”
The Passion, put on by Fox, will be a live, modern-day depiction of Jesus' final hours on Earth. In addition to Yearwood, it stars Chris Daughtry, Seal, singer-songwriter Prince Royce and others. The musical's songs are being written by High School Musical scribe Peter Barsocchini and arranged by Glee‘s Adam Anders.
The Passion will air live from New Orleans at 8PM ET on March 20.
