Today's date in 1944, everyone's attention was on Europe as the allied forces invaded occupied France.  All major-league baseball games were canceled.

During the annual free-agent draft in 1983, the Minnesota Twins picked pitcher Tim Belcher.  However, rejecting the 125 thousand dollar sign-on bonus, Belcher opted to pitch for Team USA in the Pan American Games.

And in 1992, the Mets Eddie Murray passed Mickey Mantle's record and thus became the all-time leader in RBI's by a switch-hitter; his count 1,510.
