In 1939, the Yankees and Lou Gehrig announce his retirement as a player due to his being afflicted with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.

Back in 1950, Yankees Joe DiMaggio racked up his 2,000 hit in a game against the Indians.  Joe, Luke Appling and Wally Moses were the only active players with 2000 or more hits.

Ken Harrelson of the Indians announced his retirement in 1971.  He plans to join the pro golf tour.

And finally, in 1986, NFL draft pick and Heisman trophy winner, Bo Jackson, signed with the Kansas City Royals.
