Tight Game Early-Lions Roar Past Houston
Thursday night, KVGO had some 1A East subsection quarterfinal boys basketball on the air waves as well, as the Houston Hurricanes traveled to Spring Grove. Spring Grove erased an early deficit and won by a score of 72-33.
In the early going, the game was almost like the Houston game in Mabel on Tuesday night. We had three lead changes in the first 9 points scored in the game. The Lions were getting in early foul trouble, which forced Brock Schuttemeier and then Noah Myrah to sit with two fouls early in the first half. One Spring Grove Lion stepping into the game was Devon Nerstad - more on that later.
Houston held on to a 7-4 lead for a few minutes. Shots forced up were not going in on either side. Then Spring Grove got their offense and defense going. A 9-0 and the home Lions were up 13-7. Keeping things slowed down for a while was the foul trouble, but it must have been over a dozen turnovers forced down the stretch as Spring Grove ended the first half on a 38-9 run to take the lead 42-16 at the break.
The second half, Spring Grove kept up their defense and put on a couple more 9-2 runs. A total of nine Lions scored in the contest, and the final was 72-33. Spring Grove will play Kingsland at 6:00 on Monday night up in Rochester.
KVGO Player of the Game for the Houston Hurricanes was Brady Happel. Brady did not get any big scoring at all, but got the ball, played some defense, and went up for a number of rebounds.
KVGO Player of the Game for Spring Grove was Chase Grinde. Chase scored 29 points by both being strong inside and hitting three from beyond the arc. Unofficially, Chase had a double double of 18 points and 10 rebounds at the half.
The Kingsley Mercantile Game Ball was awarded to Devon Nerstad. The senior came off the bench at a time that Spring Grove was in foul trouble. Devon made his impact on the game, scoring 10 as the Lions advance to Rochester.
