Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Areas of southern Minnesota were socked with up to a foot of slushy snow from the latest April snowstorm to visit the state. Numerous school districts sent students home early today as the storm system arrived in the late morning and started dumping snow on communities along the Iowa border.

By the time the snow began tapering off in the late afternoon, deep snow blanketed parts of Freeborn, Mower, Fillmore, and Houston Counties, along with a wide area of northern Iowa. The most recent snowfall reports from the National Service say LeRoy reported 12-inches, Glenville was hit by 11-inches, 10 inches fell in Adams, almost 9.5 inches hit Austin, and Albert Lea reported 9-inches. There were also reports of close to 9-inches in Houston County.

In the Rochester, most of the reports put the snowfall total in the 2-4 inch range, which matched the forecast. The official snowfall total at the Rochester Airport has yet to be reported, but there have been unofficial reports from a site just south of the airport of just under 4-inches of new snow. If that’s confirmed, it would push the monthly total in Rochester to around 17-inches, making it the snowiest April on record in Rochester.
