It's been long rumored that there has been a cougar roaming between Faribault, Kenyon, Nerstrand, West Concord, and Dodge Center. There have been social media photos that were hard to distinguish if they were cougar tracks or just a dogs track that had melted. Now we have a report of a Dodge County Sheriff's Deputy responding to a call of a big cat in the Dodge Center area and seeing a cougar.

In a post to the Dodge County Sheriff's Office Facebook page, it stated that "deputies searched the area tonight and located the cougar in the field north of North Street and Airport Drive" in Dodge Center. The post went on to state that "The Deputy watched the cougar with binoculars as it retreated further into the field, and notified the Minnesota DNR of the sighting."

Residents in the area have stated that "they’ve seen the cougar over the past few days." The post went on to state that "anyone who observes the cougar is urged to call 9-1-1 to report it immediately." Photo documentation is also recommended if you are able to snap a picture safely, as then it would be reported to the Minnesota DNR.

The Minnesota DNR's cougar page offers some reassurance if people are worried about traveling outdoors as "a person is 1,000 times more likely to be struck by lightning than attacked by a cougar."

We have reached out to Sheriff Rose about either an official release or report on the sighting and will update this if we get one.
