Section Final Friday Doesn’t Disappoint in Southeast Minnesota
It was an incredible night of High School Football this past Friday night with many great games taking place. The Section 1 9-man, 1A, 1AA, 1AAA, 1AAAA, and 2AA champions were all crowned on what was a windy night.
Here are the scores and some highlights:
#3 LeRoy-Ostrander Tops #1 Lanesboro in Section 1 9-man Final
The LeRoy-Ostrander Cardinals were able to utilize the ground game to take down the Burros. Lanesboro, ranked #2 in the state, was 10-0 coming into this matchup but it was the Cardinals' ground game and excellent play on the defensive line that led them to the 30-6 win.
LeRoy-Ostrander advances to the State Quarterfinals for the first time since 2004 and will take on Section 4 champion Wheaton/Herman-Norcross on Thursday, November 11th at Macalester College. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
#1 Rushford-Peterson takes down #2 Fillmore Central in Section 1A Final
The Rushford-Peterson Trojans were able to win a defensive battle with Fillmore Central to get a 7-0 win. The strong defense from both teams was impressive, but the Trojans were able to connect on a touchdown pass in the 2nd quarter to get the win.
Rushford-Peterson will now take on the Section 4 champion Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa at Crown College next Friday night. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
#1 Chatfield takes the Section 1AA crown behind dominant ground game over #2 Goodhue
The Chatfield Gophers used a strong night on the ground from Sam Backer to take down the Goodhue Wildcats 46-15. Backer had 20 carries for 345 yards and 6 TDs. It was a record-setting night on the ground for Backer.
Chatfield will now take on Section 4 champion Minneapolis North on Thursday night at Rochester Mayo High School. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m.
#3 Plainview-Elgin-Millville upends #1 Cannon Falls in Section 1AAA Final
The PEM Bulldogs were able to score late to take down Cannon Falls 21-18 to head to the state tournament for the first time since 2011. The Bulldogs defense held a powerful Cannon Falls offense to just 18 points in the win.
PEM will take on Section 4 Champion Breck in the State Quarterfinals on Saturday, November 13th at Burnsville High School. Kickoff is slated for Noon.
#2 Kasson-Mantorville tops rival #4 Byron for Section 1AAAA title
The Kasson-Mantorville KoMets got the win over Byron 42-14 to advance to the state tournament. The KoMets will battle with Section 4 champion Fridley in the State Quarterfinals. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. on Thursday, November 11th at Lakeville South High School.
#2 Maple River takes down #1 Blooming Prairie 40-18 in Section 2AA Final
Maple River took down Blooming Prairie in the section final to advance to the state tournament. Blooming Prairie was 10-0 and ranked #1 in the state going into the section final matchup and on a 28 game win streak. A strong Maple River defense, which allows just 8.5 points per game, was able to slow down a high-powered Blossom offense to get the win.
Maple River will take on Section 3 Champion Pipestone Area on Friday night at Hastings High School. Kickoff slated for 7 p.m.
The Section 1AAAAA Championship is between #1 Rochester Mayo and #2 Owatonna and will be played Saturday night at Rochester Mayo High School with kickoff slated for 7 p.m. The Spartans topped Owatonna in Week 1 58-31.
