Brooklyn Center, MN (KROC AM News) - A curfew for much of the Twin Cities and a heavy police presence Monday night appeared to help prevent a repeat of the unrest and looting that happened Sunday in Brooklyn Center.

For a second straight night, a crowd gathered at the city’s police station to protest Sunday’s deadly police shooting of a black man.

Security precautions that included fencing and other barricades had been erected Monday and the city’s police department was joined by National Guards soldiers and state troopers in protecting the building.

Confrontations between the crowd of demonstrators and law enforcement continued well beyond the 7:00 pm curfew and police later reported some arrests. There were also scattered reports of looting in Brooklyn Center and elsewhere. During the evening, police deployed numerous rounds of tear gas and eventually forced the group at the police station to move away.

At one point, Brooklyn Center's mayor ventured into the crowd in hopes of easing the tension.

Earlier in the day, Gov. Walz ordered the curfew in hopes of avoiding the rioting and looting that occurred last year in the metro following the death of George Floyd.

The state and Minneapolis had already organized a large security operation prior to the beginning of the trial of Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis cop who is charged with killing Floyd.
