The Minnesota Zoo is one of our landmarks in this great state and unfortunately, Covid-19 has made it financially difficult for one of our favorite zoos.

There isn't an official statement as of yet indicating that the Minnesota Zoo will be closing, but during a press conference recently, Governor Tim Walz said, "We need some help for the Minnesota Zoo." They’re at the point where they’re going to have to move animals and close if we don’t do something on that. I think that’s a treasure for Minnesota. I think it makes sense to keep that, and we’re going to need a little help this session."

According to a story on KARE 11, two-thirds of the zoo's total budget is from gate fees and donations.  The pandemic hit at one of the worst times for the zoo and they were required to close their doors during the busiest part of their season.

"Our anticipated losses are going to be $6.3 million ... plus we've used all of our reserves and any dollars we had on our books. As of the end of June, we'll have depleted all of the resources at the zoo." - Minnesota Zoo director, John Frawley

How much money is needed to keep the Minnesota Zoo open?  $6 million.  This would allow the zoo to open their doors again with social distancing in place for everyone's safety.  Financial help for the Minnesota Zoo is part of the bonding bill that was recently put together and Walz is asking lawmakers to pass this during the special session.

Fingers crossed that our Minnesota Zoo is saved!  If you'd like to help them out, there are a bunch of fundraisers going on right now on Facebook or you could just make a donation directly to the Minnesota Zoo here.
