Rochester Nonprofit Recognized With Prestigious Award
The Minnesota Council of Nonprofits has announced the recipients of the 2018 Nonprofit Mission Awards. These awards are handed out to the nonprofit organizations that have made a tremendous impact on the quality of life in Minnesota. This year, Hiawatha Homes in Rochester was recognized for their efforts in our community.
The idea of Hiawatha Homes was thought up by a group of parents sharing coffee in 1973. The parents discussed a “children first” environment where kids with disabilities would receive quality, loving care. Three years later Hiawatha Homes opened its doors to serve 40 children in Rochester. An adult home was opened a few years later in 1981.Today, close to 150 people benefit from Hiawatha’s community-based residential homes.
