Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) -  A Rochester man was sentenced today to nearly 3 years in prison for a conviction stemming from an armed robbery at Apache Mall earlier this year.

23-year-old Tamarick Shaffer earlier entered a guilty plea to a second-degree assault charge in the case. As part of the plea agreement, prosecutors dropped four other felony charges, including two counts of first-degree aggravated robbery, another second-degree assault charge, and a charge of threats of violence. His 33-month prison term will be reduced by the 192 days he has already spent in jail.

Shaffer was arrested in late April after what started as a shoplifting incident escalated into an armed robbery. According to the criminal complaint, Shaffer and another man were accused of stealing a sweatshirt from the Nuka Listra store in the Apache Mall. After a store employee who witnessed the theft chased after the two men, Shaffer was accused of pulling out a handgun and pointing it at the employee's head before stating he was going to "pop him."

The court record says Shaffer and the other man then ran out of Apache Mall. investigators were able to identify and locate Shaffer a couple of days after the incident.
