Rochester, MN (KROC- AM News) - A message from the Rochester Police Department - we don’t call people asking them to pay their unpaid fines.

A Rochester man found out the hard way after he was contacted earlier this month.

Police Capt. Casey Moilanen says the 56-year-old victim received a call from a man who said he was from the police department. The man said the victim owed the department $9000 in unpaid fines.

The victim started asking questions and the caller told him to check the number on his caller ID. The victim found it showed “Rochester Police Dept.”

The man was then told to pay the fines by purchasing MoneyPak cards - and he did.

He realized he had been conned a few days later and called the real Rochester Police Dept.
