Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The City of Rochester and the Destination Medical Center Corporation will be holding the first in a series of open house meetings concerning the development of a rapid transit system to serve downtown Rochester today.

The first session will take place from 11:30 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. at the University of Minnesota Rochester adjacent to the Peace Plaza in downtown Rochester. The second open house today will run from 5 until 7 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church at 810 3rd Avenue Southeast.

The informational meetings will allow officials, along with city and DMC staff, to hear comments and suggestions from community members about the plans to develop two so-called transit villages that would be connected to downtown Rochester through a bus rapid transit system. The plan has one of the transit villages located at Graham Park with the rapid transit system running along South Broadway. The other transit village would be developed just east of Country Club Manor along Cascade Lake with the rapid transit system running into the downtown area on 2nd Street Southwest.

Another set of open houses is planned for early April. Officials are also planning several "pop-up" events at a variety of locations in the community together feedback and explain the planning effort.
