Four Things to Know Before Going to the Minnesota Ice Castle
A few months ago we found out that the Minnesota Ice Castle was making a comeback. This past weekend, a few friends and I decided to take a small road trip to the new location in New Brighton and go check it out. I have always wanted to go see the one in Colorado but never got the chance to. If you have some time in the next few weeks, this adventure is definitely worth your time. Here are four things you should know before going.
Minnesota Ice Castle
First off... order your tickets early! We waited until the last minute and got the last time slot. Because we were in the last time slot, we didn't get a lot of time in the castle. There is a lot to see and explore. If you get an earlier time slot, you will have plenty of time to explore and take a ton of great pictures.
The second thing... wear layers. You are going to slide down ice slides, sit on ice thorns and be in the cold for a while. Layers never killed anyone and you can always take them off. If you are like me and like to take pictures, make sure you have gloves that allow you to take pictures without having to take your gloves off every two seconds.
Speaking of pictures, it's best to know your camera before you get there. There are SO MANY great photo ops in the castle. If you plan on going at night, some of the lighting makes it hard to get the perfect picture. The lighting in the castle is beautiful, but in many photos, it acts as backlighting. This means if you try and take a picture of a person from far away, they are going to appear as a silhouette because they don't have any front lighting to compensate for the backlighting. Using your flash will help a tad, but you'll have to play with some color correction apps to get the lighting right.
The last piece of advice I have for you from personal experience... DON"T WEAR COWBOY BOOT! I don't own snow boots because I have always used my cowboy boot in the winters. I just waterproof them. I've never had issues until the ice castle. The ice castle is slick so you need shoes with traction on the bottom. My poor friends had to help me through the whole thing because I was sliding everywhere. I spent more time on the ground than on my feet. Snow boots and running shoes are the best options for this adventure.
If you are looking for a fun adventure in the next few weeks, I would totally recommend going and checking out the Minnesota Ice Castle. It's so much fun and a great sight to see.
