Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) – More rain fell at the Rochester airport Monday night than during the entire month of August.

The National Weather Service says 1.69 inches fell before midnight, breaking the previous record of 1.35 inches for Sept. 2nd that was set in 1961.

The August rainfall total at RST was 1.54 inches and most of that fell during the first few weeks of the month.

Until Monday night’s rain, Rochester was experiencing a moisture deficit that had grown to three inches. Between July 21st and the end of August, the airport rainfall total was just over 1 ½ inches. The total from the beginning of May to July 20th was more than two feet.

So far this year, the rainfall total is nearly 39 inches, which is 14 inches above normal.

The NWS also says Rochester set a record for the wettest "water year" which runs from Oct 1st - Sept 30.  Monday's rain increased the total from Oct. 1st last year to 46.05 inches. The previous record was 44.92 inches, set in 2016.

The storm cells that moved through SE Minnesota Monday night also produced hail in Kasson, Mantorville, and Stewartville. They also produced strong winds. A gust of 59 mph was recorded at the Rochester airport.

The rainfall total at St Marys Hospital was six-tenths of an inch.
