Pay Raises for Rochester City Council and Mayor Are Up For Vote

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) -The Rochester City Council is scheduled to Monday night on a pay raise that was delayed a year because of the pandemic.

When the City Council voted in January of last year to adopt a new pay scale for the elected officials and the city’s Mayor, the salaries were lowered by adjusting the formula used in the original proposal downward 20 percentage points in response to criticism from community members. It was expected the Council would act to implement the full pay raises for 2021, but the economic impact of COVID-19 resulted in a postponement.

A consent agenda item for Monday’s City Council meeting calls for implementing the second phase of the pay plan next year. It would modify the formula used to determine the salaries, which are based on percentages of the most recent adjusted median income for a single-person household.

The Mayor’s pay would be boosted from 100 percent of the AMI to 120 percent of the figure, which has been calculated at nearly $84,000. The City Council President’s salary would grow to just over $64,000 or 92 percent of the AMI, while the pay for the other Council members would jump to nearly $56,000, which equates to 60 percent of the local AMI.
