Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The new Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Winona-Rochester was officially installed during a ceremony in Rochester this morning.

The ticketed event took place at the Co-Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist in downtown Rochester as Bishop Robert E. Barron officially succeeded now retired Bishop John Quinn. Barron was appointed to the leadership position by Pope Francis last month.

He is 62 years old and previously served as Los Angeles Auxiliary Bishop. Barron is well-known for his Word on Fire Catholic Ministries. The diocese news release says the popular website has more than 3 million Facebook followers and hundreds of thousands of followers on other social media platforms.

A news release says Barron was born in Chicago but also spent portions of his childhood in Detroit before enrolling in the Mundelein Seminary in Chicago and continuing his studies at the Catholic University of America in Washington DC. He was ordained into the priesthood in 1986 and later earned a Doctorate of Sacred Theology from the Institut Catholique de Paris.

The Rochester-based Diocese of Winona-Rochester includes 107 parishes, 4 high schools, 30 elementary schools, and the Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Winona. According to the diocese website, it is home to more than 130,000 Catholics.
