Motorist Charged With Killing 8-Year-Old Minnesota Girl
Shakopee, MN (KROC-AM News) - Felony charges and been filed against a man who recently struck and killed a young girl while driving through a residential neighborhood near Mystic Lake Casino.
47-year-old Joseph Jacobson of Shakopee is charged with two counts of criminal vehicular homicide in connection with the death of the 8-year-old child on the evening of August 22 in Prior Lake. He is accused of driving through a stop sign and striking the girl while she was riding her bike through an intersection. The criminal complaint also indicates that testing of a blood sample taken from Jacobson after the tragic incident came back positive for methamphetamine.
The charges state the deadly collision was witnessed by the young girl's mother. She told police that after giving the 8-year-old permission to ride her bike to a nearby convenience store, she followed in her car and watched as the SUV driven by Jacobson went through the stop sign and hit her daughter. The incident was also recorded by a surveillance camera at the nearby casino, which confirmed Jacobson did not slow down or stop at the stop sign.
Following the crash, the court document indicates the SUV and Jacobson's cell phone were seized as evidence. When he questioned why, one of the responding officers informed Jacobson that his phone would be searched to see if he was using that at the time of the crash and the officer stated that Jacobson responded by saying, "I think I was."
