Minnesota School Cancels Classes Due to Threatening ‘Meme’
A Twin Cities high school canceled classes today due to a potential threat.
A statement issued by the Richfield Police Department says the Richfield High School principal contacted police around 6:30 this morning to report a photo circulating on social media. The photo was of a Richfield High School student wearing school clothing, and holding a gun. The "meme" also included a caption reading " We're on our way."
Richfield Police responded by stationing officers at the high school.
The news release says the 17-year-old student in the photo and a parent voluntarily came to the Richfield Police Department at about 8 AM. Through their cooperation, investigators determined the photo had been taken in March and the weapon was a replica gun. It was also learned that someone else had added the threatening message and distributed it on social media.
Richfield Police say the family then allowed officers to go into their home and remove the replica firearm. Officials say the investigation is ongoing and they do not believe there are "any additional risks or concerns to our community regarding this incident."
