I'm the first to admit that I never enjoyed studying history in school.  I found it totally boring.  Why did I need to know what happened so many years ago?  Well, my opinion recently changed.  Monday evening I had the opportunity to attend the Commonweal Theatre Company's performance of "Woody Guthrie's American Song".  In addition to showcasing exceptional musical talent by the Commonweal cast, the audience is treated to an American history lesson through Guthrie's music depicting the Dust Bowl, the Depression, building of the Coulee Dam, and World War II.  While I totally enjoyed the music and acting, I was drawn in by the words of the actors and found myself feeling saddened by what our fellow Americans went through in those difficult times.  Songs like "Dust Bowl Refugee", "Ain't Gonna Be Treated This Way" and "Reuben James" touched my heart.  So much so that I plan to visit the library and research the Dust Bowl to learn more.  If you want a night of enthralling music and acting, as well as a history lesson thrown in for good measure, visit the Commonweal Theatre Company in Lanesboro for "Woody Guthrie's American Song".  You won't be disappointed.
