St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - The perennial debate over Sunday liquor sales in Minnesota is finally over.

Governor Mark Dayton, still recovering from prostate cancer surgery at the Mayo Clinic, today put his signature on a bill that repeals Minnesota’s Prohibition-era law banning liquor stores from opening on Sundays. The new law will take effect on July 2nd. The measure received bipartisan support when it came up for final votes in the State Senate and State House last week.

After signing the legislation, Governor Dayton stated, “This new law reflects the desires of most people in Minnesota, who have made it clear to their legislators that they want to have this additional option.”

Dayton also cited recent polls that showed two-thirds of Minnesotans support the change.

The new law leaves the decision on whether to open on Sunday up to individual liquor store owners.
