Controversial Rochester Housing Project Moves Forward
Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - A proposed housing project in Rochester’s Folwell School neighborhood took another step forward Monday.
The City Council gave its final approval to a zone change needed for the project, known as Legacy on Fourteenth.
It was strongly opposed by numerous neighbors.
It consists of two lots on the north side of 6th Street and on the west side of 14th Ave. SW. One is vacant and the other contains a single-family house the city has described as "run-down, blighted, dilapidated, and in need of significant repairs."
The council held a public hearing on the proposal in May, a few weeks after the Planning and Zoning Commission denied the zone change. Staff had recommended the change be approved.
Material presented to the council prior to Monday’s vote noted:
“No evidence was presented to the Council, at the public hearing or otherwise, that approval of the zone change would lead to any diminution in property values for abutting properties or other neighbors.”
The project still needs to move through the permitting process.
