When it comes to employers in the state of Minnesota, the organization that tops the list is one that is pretty familiar to those of us in southeast Minnesota.

The Minneapolis-St. Paul Business Journal conducts a survey each spring that seeks to find out just how many Minnesotans are employed by the various companies, organizations and businesses here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.

Their survey here in 2022 has a familiar name at the top, but has some distinct changes in the rest of the top five largest employers in Minnesota, no doubt because of... (say it with me now)... the pandemic. Altogether, these five organizations provide jobs for just under 190,000 residents of the North Star State.

So just who are the largest employers in Minnesota? Take a look:

And again this year, Rochester's own Mayo Clinic (described in the survey as a provider of 'medical care, research and education') tops the list as the largest employer in the North Star State, with 48,200 employees here in Minnesota. Mayo was also in the top spot in the 2021 survey.

2. Alina Health System

Alina Health System in Minneapolis jumped four spots in this year's largest employer survey, from number-six in 2021 to second on the list in this year's survey. The medical system, which includes hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, specialty care centers and more, employs 40,663 Minnesotans.

3. The State of Minnesota

It takes a lot of employees to keep the state of Minnesota running, apparently-- even if it's a few less than in 2021. Because Minnesota's state government employs 36,002 Minnesotans across its government buildings in Saint Paul, good for third place on this year's largest employer survey, down from second place last year.

4. The U.S. Federal Government

And, just like it takes a lot of employees to keep the state of Minnesota running, it also takes a lot of employees to keep the work of the federal government churning here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes. The federal government places fourth on the list of largest employers in Minnesota in 2022, with 31,936 employees on its payroll-- also slipping one spot from third place on the list last year.

5. Fairview Health Services

Another healthcare system rounds out the top five list of Minnesota's largest employers. Fairview Health Services in Minneapolis, an academic health system that includes clinics, hospitals, senior services, pharmacy, and clinical research, employs 31,758 Minnesotans in 2022, putting it fifth on this year's survey-- the same spot in which it placed last year.
