Minneapolis (KROC AM News) - A longtime Minnesota sports figure has died.

Fox Sports North announced Friday Tom Hanneman had died.

His cause of death was not released. He was 68.

Hanneman was born in La Crosse, WI and joined WCCO TV in Minneapolis in the 1970s, eventually working his way into sports reporting. He was the TV play-by-play announcer for the Timberwolves from 1989 until he left to work with FSN in 2012.

According to Wikipedia, Hanneman was also involved in a noteworthy non-sports event:

“ During his time at WCCO, Hanneman drew national attention when he was held hostage while covering the 1979 Red Lake Indian Reservation uprising.”

Hanneman's father Don lived in Rochester for several years.
