Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) -The Minnesota Secretary of State office says voters in Rochester and the other areas of southern Minnesota included in the current First Congressional District will be asked to elect a successor to Hagedorn on August 9.

Minnesota Secretary of State Steve Simon today issued the following statement:

“I want to offer my condolences to the family and friends of Congressman Hagedorn. He served the people of his district with an admirable passion. May his memory be a blessing.

His passing has created a vacancy in the office of U.S. Representative for the 1st Congressional District, which by law will be filled by a special election.”

August 9 is the same day as the statewide primary for the November general election, which means voters within the current boundaries of the congressional district to participate in the special election while voters living inside the new boundaries of the district, including residents of Wabasha and Goodhue Counties, will be casting ballots to narrow the field of candidates seeking to represent the First District starting in 2023.

The person elected through to the special election would represent the district through the final month of Hagedorn's term in office. A primary election for the seat is planned for May 24.

Hagedorn's death was announced this morning by his wife. He had been battling kidney cancer and was under the treatment of the Mayo Clinic. He underwent surgery a little over two years ago to remove the affected kidney but announced a summer that his cancer had returned.
