Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Rochester teenager has learned the hard way to be careful when receiving a call about her social security number.

The 18-year-old received the call on Friday and was told her social security number had been used to rent a car and that traces of blood and cocaine were found in the vehicle. The caller said he was with the Social Security Department and told the teenager she would be contacted by police.

The caller then asked for the teen’s social security number and she gave it to him. The teen was also told to buy some gift cards and was asked to pass on her banking information.

The teen later realized she was being scammed and contacted her bank and police. She did not purchase any gift cards.
