Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Rochester City Council agenda this evening includes items dealing with environmental and energy sustainability issues.

The Council is being asked to approve updated greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals. The existing goals were adopted in 2017 and called for a 30% reduction in the city's greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. The proposed updated goals would set that mark at 50% with the goal of a 100% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.

The City Council is also expected to act on a recommendation concerning the location of a new electric vehicle fast charging station in downtown Rochester. The 2022 Destination Medical Center capital improvement project budget includes $100,000 to fund a new charging station on the eastern side of the DMC district. The recommendation being presented to the City Council tonight calls for locating the charging station on 1st Avenue Southwest outside the 3rd Street Parking Ramp.

If approved, the charging station would use five current public parking spaces on First Avenue. Two other sites were considered. One is the People's Food Co-op parking lot along 6th Street Southwest, and the other is on 5th Street Southwest north of the 501 development. That location would also use five public parking spaces.
