Minnesota Loons Dying From West Nile Virus

Three loons have died in Northeastern Minnesota earlier this month. The Minnesota DNR has been looking into why this is happening.

Bring Me the News writes that in a statement to them from the DNR, the DNR said that two of the three loons that died, died because of West Nile Virus.

Nongame wildlife specialist Gaea Crozier spoke with Bring Me the News and said, "'When we start seeing multiple birds dying on a single lake, we want to know about it so we can start tracking the information and determine when further testing is warranted.'"

Birds are less likely to be able to fend off illnesses than humans and other animals, which is part of the reason why these loons died from West Nile Virus.
