Submitted by Ben Aberg.  Tuesday night, KFIL brought you the volleyball matchup between the Spring Grove Lions and the Mabel-Canton Cougars. Overshadowing the event was Cancer Awareness; both teams were sporting t-shirts with #MCSGfightingtogether and #4Paula to support her fight with breast cancer. There was a silent auction before and during the match, and immediately after the contest, a live auction took place. With much of the crowd wearing the same t-shirts, there may not be many left, but if you are looking for a t-shirt to support the cause, contact the Mabel-Canton school.
As for the match, the first set saw 4 ties before a 10-0 M-C run. The Cougars later went on a 6-0 run, with the Lions hanging tough late. Mabel-Canton took set number one 25-16. Set number two was even tighter than the first. The Lions and Cougars were tied 9 times and there were 5 lead changes as well. Great serving by the Cougars propelled them to the lead after that and the set win 25-18. The third set was tied just twice before a couple of runs by the home Cougars, putting the game and the match away with a 25-15 set win for the sweep.
For the Spring Grove Lions, Lauryn Bohr won KFIL/Subway Player of the Game. The game plan for M-C was focused on Bohr and she still got good hits down. For Mabel-Canton, Savannah Slafter took home the Subway Player of the Game award. Slafter had a great night serving, with a few ace serves, and was active on the attack as she has been her whole career. The Kingsley Mercantile Game Ball was given to Lexi Thorson. Thorson was clutch in the tight second set, with serves that really got the visiting Lions out of sync.
