“Do Better Rochester?” One Person Claims 2nd Street Joe Has Gone Too Far
For more than twenty years, Joe Johnson has been as much a part of the Rochester landscape as the Ear of Corn water tower or the Mayo Clinic. But this week, the man we all know as "2nd Street Joe" was the target of a Facebook post calling him "disgusting and disturbing."
The complaint came from an anonymous poster on the "Spotted in Rochester" Facebook page, who took issue with Joe's choice of attire during his daily flag-waving routine outside Saint Marys Hospital. You can read the full, unedited post below:

That complaint paints Joe as a "public nuisance," but the overwhelming response to that post tells a much different story. Joe is far more than just a guy on a corner, he’s a local treasure.
Every year, Joe makes countless people smile. Whether it’s a patient looking out of a hospital window during their toughest moments or a commuter stuck in 2nd Street traffic, Joe has a way of bringing a little light to the day.
Why Does 2nd Street Joe Waive Flags in Rochester, MN?
Joe didn't start waiving flags to get attention; it started as a way to heal. Over 20 years ago, following the death of his father, an Army veteran, Joe took to the streets with an American flag. It was Memorial Day, and he was simply looking for a way to process his grief and honor his father’s memory. What began as a personal tribute has turned into a lifelong mission to bring joy to others.
Joe has faced his share of hardships, from health scares to financial struggles, but Rochester has always had his back. Over the years, local residents have stepped up with GoFundMe campaigns to make sure he has what he needs, proving that the love he pours into this city is returned right back to him.
Joe’s impact is impossible to measure, but it is undeniable. In a world that can feel pretty dark and divided, Joe is a daily shot of happiness for many people.
