Rochester’s ‘Yammy Bear’ Released From Hospital After Assault

Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The victim of a recent brutal assault in Rochester has been discharged from St. Marys Hospital.

A message posted on Facebook by the wife of Charles Jackson says he is now home and trying to rest. Jackson, who is well known locally as the man inside the Yammy Bear mascot, was working at a halfway house located on the Olmsted County campus when a man living in the facility allegedly struck him on the head with a metal tire pump.

Rochester police reported that Jackson suffered an obvious serious head injury in the assault. His family, through social media, reported that he was admitted to the ICU at St. Marys Hospital for treatment following the assault on April 25.

The man accused of attacking the community activist and volunteer was charged with second-degree assault. Bail for 44-year-old Malik Johnson was set at $500,000 after he was formally charged with the crime the day after his arrest.

Johnson moved into the halfway house in southeast Rochester following his recent release from state prison. Court records indicated he had just completed his sentences for an assault on an Olmsted County Detention Deputy and an attack on a state prison correctional officer.

Johnson was also the subject of a recent Community Notification issued by the Rochester Police Department. It indicated he had been categorized as a Level 3 predatory sexual offender and had been convicted of a felony criminal sexual conduct charge in 2016.
