Is Minnesota’s Spring Behind or Ahead of Schedule This Year?
Sure, we just enjoyed our first 60-degree day in five months and the Twins already played regular season home opener, but how are other signs of Spring coming along this year in Minnesota?
There are just some things that tell you it's Spring here in the Land of 10,000 Lakes-- regardless of what the calendar says. It, of course, said Spring officially arrived here over a week ago, on March 20th. But we all know Mother Nature sometimes has other things planned for us-- like last year, when we got one final winter storm on the weekend of April 14th and 15th, right? Not very spring-like at all.
Thankfully, the gang over at Minnesota Phrenology Network is keeping track of a lot of other sure signs of Spring. As their site says, they're a group of naturalists who record the timing of when various seasonal events happen each year across Minnesota.
And, this story from MinnPost analyzed their datasets to find the average dates for the following typical Spring Things in Minnesota: Like the first robin of Spring, which usually happens around March 12th, the story said. The first sap is spotted on maple trees on March 13th. And, the first chipmunks are usually spotted around St. Patrick's Day, on March 17th.
I've seen ALL of those things already this season, so it looks like we might be ahead of schedule for Spring this year.Yay! Let's hope Mother Nature keeps it that way, and that these Spring Things-- including warmer weather-- is here to stay!
