Writer of hits including "Sixteen Tons" and "Smoke! Smoke! Smoke! (That Cigarette)", Merle Travis was born November 29, 1917 in Rosewood, Kentucky.  Merle is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.
The second annual Grammy Awards were held in 1959.  "The Battle of New Orleans" won the award for Song of the Year and Best Country and Western Performance for Johnny Horton.  Deservedly so; great song.
And in 1994, "Brand New Man" by Brooks & Dunn set a milestone by becoming the first album by a country duo to be certified quadruple-platinum.
