Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A Rochester man has been charged with reckless discharge of a firearm and a gross misdemeanor count of child endangerment for allegedly firing a handgun inside a vehicle that was transporting a six-year-old child.

The criminal complaint filed against 34-year-old Cleary Grubb alleges he was intoxicated and in the passenger seat of a vehicle driven by his wife when he discharged a single round from a .357 revolver while she was driving home with him and their daughter after attending a barbecue Saturday night. No one was injured, but the bullet shattered the passenger side window before becoming lodged in the vehicle’s side pillar.

Grubb's wife told police that he "was drunk and became paranoid as they were leaving" the barbeque. She also indicated her husband was carrying the firearm when he began walking back to their vehicle and she assumed he had put it away when he got inside. The court document states she later heard a loud bang that was accompanied by a bright flash inside the vehicle. She told police she immediately stopped and ordered her husband to get out of the vehicle before driving herself and their daughter home.

According to the complaint, Grubb was outside the family's northwest Rochester residence when officers arrived around 11:30 p.m. and placed him under arrest. The officers located the gun inside the vehicle and the bullet lodged in the side pillar. His wife told the officers her husband did not have a permit to carry the gun, and that he usually keeps it next to the bed.

Conditional bail for Grubb was set at $30,000 at his arraignment in Olmsted County Court this morning. He is due back in court on June 8.
