In a local twist to the news of the latest Naval Ship heading onto the high seas, the USS Minneapolis-St. Paul, a Northfield naval officer had the honor to crack a bottle of champagne on the hull as it slid sideways into the water. Check out the video! 


According to online Naval ship records, this is the second ship named Minneapolis-St. Paul. The first was a Los Angeles-class attack submarine that served from 1984 to 2008.

Closer to home there has been two vessels named after local areas the first was the USS Faribault that was used in WWII, and the USS Goodhue also used in WWII.

Currently, there are 2 other vessels with Minnesota ties a submarine that was commissioned in 2013 the USS Minnesota (SSN-783), and a crane ship in dry-dock in Boston the SS Gopher State (ACS-4).
