WARNING: The Plants You Just Bought Are Going to Die This Weekend
Frost advisory has been issued for southeast Minnesota.
I can feel my green thumb shriveling up already at this news. The National Weather Service has issued a Frost Advisory for areas of southwest and west-central Wisconsin, north-central and northeast Iowa, and southeast Minnesota, including Rochester.
If you spent any money on gorgeous flowers or plants, cover them up tonight!
If you were one of the early birds and bought gorgeous flowers and plants already for your garden, you are going to need to find all of your blankets and start tucking those babies in. The frost advisory is in effect from midnight tonight until Saturday at 8:00 am.
A few nurseries in the area are also reminding people of the advisory. Sargent's Gardens stated in an e-mail the following recommendation:
...bring any container plants in to the garage or inside a heated space, cover what is planted in the ground with a light blanket or sheet. You can use plastic, however make sure to prop the plastic up over the plants to create air space as frost will come through plastic that is touching the plant. New growth on perennials may be singed as well, however perennials will not perish due to a frost.
If you forget to cover your plants, they will look like they died.
Trust me on this one. I have made the mistake of buying all the gorgeous plants early, because they are just so pretty, and then I wake up one morning and my plants are all dead.
If I want to buy flowers and plants for my garden, where should I go?
I just loaded up the other day with a bunch of plants from Fleet Farm. They had a little sale on herbs happening and because I absolutely love rosemary and basil, I stocked up early. There are a bunch of great places in the area though that people love for all their plant purchases. Keep scrolling and you'll see 9 places that are claimed to be the best in Southeast Minnesota.
