Rochester, MN (KROC AM News) - A Mazeppa man drove through a stop sign at 55 mph in rural Rochester over the weekend, causing a traffic wreck that sent two people to St. Marys Hospital.

Olmsted County Sheriff’s Capt. Scott Behrns says 20-year-old Preston Gray was driving on 60th Ave SW and went through the stop sign at the intersection with Country Club Rd, crashing into another vehicle.

A passenger in his car - 57-year-old Suan Gray - was taken to St. Marys. A passenger in the other vehicle - 48-year-old Katrina McGaffey - was airlifted to St. Marys with serious injuries. That vehicle was driven by 49-year-old Darren McGaffey of Byron.

Both cars collided with a third vehicle that was stopped at the intersection. That driver was not hurt.

The wreck happened around 2:15 PM Saturday.

Behrns says Gray told a deputy he knew the stop sign was there but was distracted while talking to his passenger.

He was ticketed for careless driving and failing to stop.
