Although recording began a few days prior, on January 28, 1985, recording was completed on the first-ever single to receive multi-platinum status. The song was "We Are The World," recorded by a host of outstanding musical talent under the name "USA for Africa." Written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, and produced by Quincy Jones, "We Are The World" featured forty-five artists including Ray Charles, Willie Nelson, Billy Joel, Cindy Lauper, Bruce Springsteen, Kenny Rogers, and the list goes on and on. Proceeds from record sales were donated for humanitarian aid in Africa and the United States.

Released on March 7, 1985, it was a world-wide success and received numerous honors including three Grammy awards, a People's Choice award, and an American Music Award. "We Are The World" is reportedly the fastest-selling American pop single in history. Tower Records in California reported a two-day sale of 1,000 copies! Generally, a hit single sells a hundred copies a week.

I find this a fascinating tidbit related to the song. Two radio announcers in Georgia organized an amazing feat on April 5, 1985 at 10:25 a.m., by getting more than 8,000 radio stations around the world to simultaneously broadcast "We Are The World." How outstanding is that?

Spend eight minutes and watch an incredible video. You won't regret it! This still gives me goosebumps.
