Spring Grove came into the quarterfinals unseeded and unranked, taking on top-seeded Springfield to kick off the Class A State Tournament at Williams Arena. The Lions shot the ball incredibly well, played stellar defense and were able to earn a 78-67 win.

The Lions were hot from beyond-the-arc, shooting 65 percent from deep in the game, while Springfield shot just over 34 percent. The great shooting performance was aided by some great defense from Spring Grove, which held Springfield to 45 percent shooting in the game.

The Lions got great play from their Seniors Ethan Matzke, Noah Elton and Alex Folz. The three combined for 65 of the teams 78 points, while Elton led the way with 25 and Matzke added 19.

The Lions also hit their free throws when it mattered, connecting on 10-of-13 from the stripe in the second half to help upend the top-seeded Tigers.

Springfield was led by their star, Isaac Fink. Fink, a Mr. Basketball Finalist, scored 30-points and pulled down six rebounds in the game. He also added seven assists. The Tigers struggled to score as the game went on, and the Lions were able to get good looks, eventually closing things out at the line.
