Section Wrestling Ramps Up At Mayo Civic Center
How can it be the middle of February already? The Winter Sports season has flown by, with section tournaments already underway for wrestling, and basketball getting underway next week.
Wrestling begins to heat up this Saturday, as the Semifinals get underway at the Mayo Civic Center. Section 1A is loaded with talent again, and it is a section where everyone has beaten everyone.
The defending State Champion in Class 1A, Zumbrota-Mazeppa, ranked 5th in the state, earned the #1 seed in the section and is followed up by Goodhue, ranked 12th in the state, and #2 seed in the section. These two squads have a tough task ahead of them, as ZM will look for revenge and take on #5 seeded Caledonia/Houston in the Semifinals. Caledonia/Houston beat ZM earlier this year, 38-32.
Goodhue, coming off an impressive 51-20 win over Lewiston-Altura/Rushford-Peterson in the quarterfinals, will take on the #3 seed Chatfield. The Gophers and Wildcats met up on January 24th, and Goodhue knocked them off 49-24.
Anyone can beat anyone when it comes to the Section meet, and with four teams you know it is going to be a wild ride in Section 1A. Semifinal wrestling starts at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
Section 1AA has been dominated by Kasson-Mantorville and Simley the past two seasons. K-M is the defending state champs, and are looking to add another trophy to the trophy case.
K-M, ranked #1 in the state, earned the #1 seed again, while Simley, ranked 3rd in the state, found themselves slotted in the #2 spot again. Simley has a tall task ahead, taking on #3 seed Plainview-Elgin-Millville, who upended Simley earlier this year, 55-12 in Ellsworth, Wisconsin. The Bulldogs will look to take that momentum into the Semifinals Saturday.
K-M will take on #4 Lake City, who they beat this season 55-6 way back in December.
Look for Section 1 to be well represented at the State Tournament, as Kasson-Mantorville and Zumbrota-Mazeppa look to defend their titles. Section 1AA Semifinals begin at 11 am.
We will have updates once an hour on 103.1 KFIL of what is going down at the Section Tournament. Tune in at about the bottom of the hour for the latest.
