Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - The storm system that produced widespread street flooding in Rochester last night was a record breaker. The National Weather Service says its station at the Rochester Airport recorded just over 3.3-inches of rain yesterday, which is over double the previous record for September 4th that was set in 1887 at 1.5-inches.

Many areas in Rochester saw over 5-inches of rain from the storm, which produced rainfall rates of 2 to 3 inches per hour at its peak. Rochester was located within a narrow band of extremely rain that stretched from Austin and Albert Lea, through the city, and into Wisconsin were the rainfall totals ranged from 4 to 6 inches. Locally, the highest rainfall total was found just north of Rochester at 6.07 inches.

Rochester Police officers were kept busy during the heavy storms that hit the city last night. Captain John Sherwin says the operators in the 911 dispatch center were swamped with calls. He says around 20 of those calls came in between 5 and 6:30 pm and were from motorists who found themselves stranded after their vehicles stalled in deep water. In some cases, the water was high enough that it poured in once the car doors were opened.
