Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - It’s a good idea - just not the right time.

That was the consensus of the Rochester City Council Monday as it discussed the results of a survey dealing with waste haulers.

There has been talk in recent years about creating districts in the city with one hauler designated for each zone. Supporters say the switch from the current system would be more cost-effective and reduce wear-and-tear on city streets.

The recent survey of citizens found respondents indicated they oppose changing the current system by a 2-1 margin (56% - 28%).

City Council Member Michael Wojcik first suggested the designated hauler system in 2015. He still supports the concept and told the council many people who oppose it change their minds after learning more about it. But he couldn’t find enough support at Monday’s meeting to move ahead with more study of the proposal.

Council President Randy Staver ended the meeting by saying the council could take another look at the proposal in the future.
