It was the final night of regular season football and there were some great matchups across Southeast Minnesota, including a game that was called after just 1 half of play, and it just so happened to be the game we were broadcasting on 103.1 KFIL.

Chatfield Takes Down Lewiston-Altura 30-14 In Shortened Game

The Chatfield Gophers took down Lewiston-Altura 30-14 in a game that was shortened to just one half due to a bank of lights going out in Lewiston during halftime. It was a major electrical issue and after the Activities Director, both head coaches, and the officiating crew gathered, they made the decision to call the game after the 1st half.

We talked with Lewiston-Altura's Activities Director Brian Menk after the decision was made and he told us that it was a major electrical issue with the lights, and they would have to get an electrician in to fix the issue. Because the lights could not be fixed in a reasonable amount of time, the game was ended at the half with Chatfield winning 30-14.

It was unfortunate as this game featured two of the top rushers in the district in Chatfield's Sam Backer and Lewiston-Altura's Collin Bonow. Both made their presence known in the first half.

On his first carry, Backer went 80-yards to the house to give the Gophers an 8-0 lead, and then Backer connected with Luke Carrier for a 25-yard touchdown to give the Gophers a 16-0 lead in the first quarter.

Lewiston-Altura responded quickly after Bonow ran for a 25-yard touchdown to make it 16-7. Jackson Schild of Chatfield got the next touchdown for the Gophers to make it 22-7.

Bonow had an incredible run on the next Cardinal possession as he bounced to the outside and turned on the jets to go for a 43-yard touchdown to make it a 22-14 game with just 4:12 to go in the first half. Chatfield was able to strike quickly as Backer connected with Cole Johnson for a 38-yard score and it was 30-14 at the half.

When the teams came back out on the field and were getting warmed up for the 2nd half, one bank of lights went out and forced the game to end after just one half of play.

Chatfield's Backer finished with 171 yards on the ground and 1 score, to go along with 115 passing yards and two touchdowns.

Bonow finished with 114 yards on the ground and two scores to lead Lewiston-Altura. Jackson Koverman finished with 38 yards rushing for L-A.

The Gophers finished the regular season with 7 straight wins and went 7-1, the Cardinals finished 3-5. Chatfield earned the #1 seed and will take on Cotter in the first round of the playoffs. Lewiston-Altura is the #6 seed and will travel to Caledonia to take on the #3 Warriors. The Section 1AA Tournament starts Tuesday, October 26th.

Upon hiring the news of his diagnosis, the Kingsland Athletic Booster Club came up with the idea of having all of the kids take a photo on the field after the game. The athletes from both teams signed the game ball, and it was auctioned off after the game. The funds raised were given to Dan Copley after the auction.

A wonderful moment by these two teams, and communities, that came together to raise money for an amazing cause.  Amazing! See more on this story courtesy of Kingsland Athletic Booster Club's Facebook stage.
