February is National Pet Dental Health Month.  While dental health is extremely important in humans, it's just as important in pets.  Dental problems in your dog or cat can cause discomfort and eventually lead to other health problems.  Signs of dental disease can include bad breath, plaque, mouth pain, drooling and decreased appetite.

Scheduling your pet for a dental check-up once a year is wise.  Your veterinarian will check for early signs of periodontal disease and will implement any necessary treatment plans.  Having your pet's teeth cleaned of plaque is also a smart step.  Plaque contains bacteria, and if enough plaque forms, the bacteria can eventually get into the animal's bloodstream causing disease.
