Minnesota Health Officials Report Season’s First Child Flu Death
St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - Flu activity in Minnesota has been on the decline in recent weeks, but state health officials this week reported the first pediatric flu-related death of the flu season.
The Department of Health has not released any information about the stricken child other than to say the case involved a severe complication, which is often the case in all flu-related fatalities. There have been 68 adult flu-related deaths in Minnesota this season. That is down considerably from the previous influenza season when the state experienced 435 flu-related deaths including 5 involving children.
The Department of Health's weekly update on flu activity throughout the state shows the number of flu-related hospitalizations dipped below 100 last week. The total for the entire season is a little under 2300. By comparison, there were nearly 6500 flu-related deaths during the previous flu season, which was considerably worse than the current season.
Overall flu activity last week remained rated as "regional.”
