Police say Zamarripa Almeda retreated into a nearby apartment when officers arrived. The press release says officers say Zamarripa Almeda holding a baseball bat at the entrance of the apartment and continued to curse before he retreated into the building. Officers continued efforts to deescalate the situation. Police say later on Zamarripa Almeda broke a window in the apartment and asked officers to shoot him while he pointed a gun at police assembled outside of the building.

The press release says two negotiators responded to the situation as part of de-escalation efforts. Police say attempts to communicate with Zamarripa Almeda continued to fail. Authorities obtained a search warrant early Thursday and responding SWAT officers flushed Zamarripa Almeda out of the apartment by firing pepper ball rounds inside the unit.

The press release says Zamarripa Almeda then walked towards his hand gun. SWAT members shot him with a non-lethal rounds and brought him into custody around 4 a.m. The Rice County Sheriff's Office and South Metro SWAT assisted Faribault police.
